Tips for moving Perishable Freight and Cargo to and from Bristol, England

Containers in Cardiff Bay

A great deal of effort and care goes into the production of all products. Presentation and product quality are considered amongst the most important features of all goods, and for this reason it is essential to ensure that goods arrive with the customer in perfect condition and this includes for perishable goods and items which are being sent as a freight shipment, to or from Bristol.

The most difficult aspect of the operation to ensure the condition of the goods is kept once the product has left the hands of the manufacturer, as the manufacturer will no longer be in control of how it is managed. With freight accounting for a significant amount of this time in the delivery process, it is important that steps are put in place to ensure that minimal or no damage occurs. Here are some tips to ensure this:

Use a recognised company

Ensure that the company you use has an established reputation for its treatment of freight and cargo goods. Certain freight companies specialise in the movement of perishables and they will have a good understanding of the correct ways to proceed with many of the tips given below.

Use suitable packaging

Packing should be weatherproof and be strong enough to survive freight. The items though being sent sometimes also need air and this depends very much on the specific food stuffs or perishables being sent. Take advice from the freight company and be clear to them exactly what you are transporting (as should always be the case).

Wrapping and sealing the products in the right way becomes even more vital with perishables. You will need to tightly seal any food items to avoid contamination and bugs getting at the food depending on the items in question.

Ensure you use the right type of containers. If you send the products by air for example then consider the temperatures at which the perishables will need to be protected for.

Use suitable protection

Consider the nature of your product and choose a material which will protect your product from the conditions that it will be subjected to during freight.

Package in manageable loads

The more products or boxes that you stack in one load, the more chance there is of significant damage. Package your goods in small loads so that only a few products are affected if that batch is harmed.

Make a note of condition of goods

Make it part of procedure to inspect the state of goods before and after freight so that you can identify where damage is occurring.

Acquire insurance

This will protect your finances against any damages that may occur, although the exact terms will depend on your contract with the insurance agency.
We have to move a wide variety of Freight types all the time and types of freight can for example include Oil Equipment, Boating products and Food items.

Timing - Because of the lifetime that perishables have. The difference in time between sea freight and air freight might be significant. This will need to be balanced though against the issues with air freight.

Legalities - Be clear about the import and export regulations for the countries involved. A good freight company will be able though to help you with all of these factors.
