Guide to New Freight Technologies
Freight is a crucial part of any business company as it is responsible for transporting goods and services all over the country, as well as the world. As such, innovations are constantly happening in the freight industry to make transport as efficient and as cost effective as possible.
These technologies can range from cleaner, more effective fuels for trucks, planes and shipping to state-of-the-art navigation systems to help cargo vehicles find the most efficient way to their destinations. Technological innovations also help security for freight companies, with scanners providing detailed x-ray scans of trucks to check for illegal cargo.
With companies such as IBM working on telematics technology to decrease fuel usage and emissions in freight trucks, cargo firms are also investing in larger trucks to move more cargo and use less fuel than two vehicles would. There has also been more interest in rail freight due to the larger quantities that can be transported and the costs than can be saved.
Renewable energy has also played an important part in new freight technologies with a Polytechnic University in Hong Kong devising an air conditioning unit that is completely run by solar energy. It is hoped that the system can be used on refrigerated trucks in order to reduce the amount of fossil fuels that are used to keep food chilled during transport.
As freight and infrastructure is often described as the blood of any country, keeping cities and towns supplied with goods and products, it is an industry that is always changing to make sure they are delivering the best service imaginable.Return to Freight Types main page.
