Guide to Intermodal freight and Logistics

Intermodal freight is the transportation of cargo from one point to the other using more than one form of transport. This type of transportation gets its name from the intermodal containers or giant reusable boxes that the goods are packed and freighted in.

The past decade has seen an increased focus on using intermodal freight transportation which has been prompted by the needs of supply chains around the world. Intermodal freight allows for the protections of freighted items since the goods are enclosed in strong metal containers.

This reduces the amount of handling the goods are exposed to in transit, almost eliminating damage risks during transfers from one mode of transport to the other. Intermodal freight involves various modes of transport including air transport, inland water transport, ocean freight, rail transport and road freight.

The main equipment that is required to successfully implement intermodal freight transport include freight containers and handling equipment. The containers used in intermodal freight transportation are governed by ISO regulations and measure 8 feet in width and 19 or 20 feet in length.

However, freight companies use different container heights according to the goods that they ship, such as taller boxes for oddly shaped machinery parts and low roofed containers for smaller items.

The intermodal containers are made of durable steel to endure harsh weather conditions during transit. Handling equipment used include Transtainers, which are used to transfer containers from ships on to land-based transport vehicles; gentry cranes and grappler lifts which allow for transfer of containers between rail cars and road transport vehicles and the reach stackers which help to stack containers or swap containers between modes of transport.
