Types Of Freight Vehicles guide for beginners

There are many types of freight vehicles, each offering a specific set of features for carrying different kinds of cargo. Some of them are:

1. Lorries or Tipplers - These have an open roof. Materials stored in the lorry can be unloaded using a wagon tippler or a rotary car dumper. Tipplers are used to transport minerals like coal, limestone and iron ore and find application in mines. They can also be used to transport heavy and voluminous items.

2. Cargo Sprinters - These are equipped with several motors, which lend the vehicles a self-propelling quality. The basic layout is akin to that of a large container with one expansive level wherein goods can be stored.

3. Coil Cars - These are designed to transport sheets of metal, especially steel.

4. Gondolas - These can be attached to railway engines and transported by rail. The tops of these vehicles are open while the ends and sides are sealed. These are Flat cars for moving freightbest suited for commodities that occupy a lot of space and for goods that are likely to fall off, including barrels, caskets and tins.

5. Flat Cars - These can be used for heavier loads which are often difficult to load onto traditional box cars, which are suited for containers and loads that are less bulky. Subtypes of this genre of specialized freight vehicles include the double stack car and the Schnabel car, which can carry extremely bulky and heavy loads.

6. Tank Cars - These are suited for plying non-solid materials, including liquids and gases.

7. Auto Carriers - These freight vehicles are meant to transport automobiles over large distances and have several levels wherein unladed vehicles can be arranged. They are useful for transporting cars and trucks across long distances.
