Getting a Job in PORT Management

Ports have been an essential part of world business and travel for thousands of years, and the opportunity to work at a port in a management position can be highly enjoyable and rewarding. Below are some of the things you can do to help you acquire a management position at a port.

Get a Qualification

One of the best ways of obtaining a management position is to acquire a specific qualification. Whilst many of the core principles of management are transferrable to any management job, gaining a specific port management qualification will look superb on your CV and show that you are focussed on working in the industry. Solent University in Southampton have for example, a course in Ship and Port Management and which can be studied over three years.

Get Experience in a Port

There are many different ways in which you can gain experience, including volunteering to work unpaid and shadow people currently in the position. A search of a site such as reed.co.uk and filtering the search for keywords such as 'port', 'freight' or 'shipping' are terms which can get you started. Jobs in ports do become available from time to time and there is nothing like getting real work experience.

Work your way up

There is no rush to get to the top, and some of the best managers are those who have worked their way up from the bottom as it allows them to fully understand the industry. Therefore, you can take any job, build up you experience, work hard and strive for the top.

Improve your Leadership Kkills

You can have all the experience and qualifications that you like, but if you do not have the right character you will not succeed in port management. Attending leadership courses is a great way to build your confidence and sculpt your character. Even if you cannot afford to take 3 years off for a full time Port Management course, there are many excellent part time and evening courses you can study. Plymouth University's International Shipping Masters degree is certainly one qualification which wil give you a good push forward.
