Guide to Doing Business in Venice, Italy

As well as being a beautiful city which a great deal of history, culture and attractions, Venice also has a thriving business environment which represents a great opportunity for people from around the world to invest. Below are some tips for when doing business in Venice.

Tips for Venice Business Etiquette

Timing of meetings

Lunchtime meetings are common in British and American business culture, but in Venice lunchtime is a time of relaxation. As such, do not schedule any business activity around this time of day as it may be seen as overbearing and a lack of respect for Venetian culture.

Attire in Venice

Appearance will count significantly towards your credibility as a viable business partner in Venice, so be sure to dress smartly and appropriately. A shirt and jacket are commonly worn Business in Thailandbut you can normally leave wearing a tie, given that the heat in summertime means that few business people wear ties.

Conversation and Conversing in Venice

Although it can be tempting to discuss the marvelous surroundings of Venice at every given opportunity, be conscious that your host will have had this discussion hundreds of times and try to direct your questions in other directions, unless of course the host initiates the conversation. Try also to learn even just a few words of Italian such as how to say please, thank you and a few other pleasantries. Attempting to speak even a few words of Italian can really be appreciated by people in Venice. It shows an appreciation of the local culture and shows an effort from your side.

Departing gesture

In Venice and in Italian in general, people who do not know each other will wish each other good day upon departing as opposed to saying goodbye, something which is considered to be informal and personal. As such, as a way of maintaining your professional etiquette, use a phrase such as buonasera as opposed to adios. It is normal also to kiss each other on the side of the cheek, whether male or female. Your best option is to let the Venetian take the lead. If they hold out there hand to shake hands then shake hands for example.

Venice addresses and location

One problem you will find in Venice is that it can be extremely hard sometimes to find an address because of the way the city is laid out. I would advise allowing a lot of extra time for finding the place we which you must meet (unless you already know the area or destination well already). Not all buildings are numbered and sometimes the bridge names are not easy to see or find.
